Upaṭṭhānasutta

When a mendicant falls asleep in the middle of the day, a deity tries to rouse them up. But not all is at it seems.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

สมัยหนึ่ง ภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง พำนักอยู่ในแนวป่าแห่งหนึ่งในแคว้นโกศล สมัยนั้นแล ภิกษุรูปนั้นไปนอนหลับในที่พักกลางวัน ฯ

ครั้งนั้น เทวดาที่สิงอยู่ในป่านั้นมีความเอ็นดูใคร่ประโยชน์แก่ภิกษุรูปนั้น หวังจะให้เธอสลดใจจึงเข้าไปหาแล้วได้กล่าวกะเธอด้วยคาถาว่า

ท่านจงลุกขึ้นเถิดภิกษุ ท่านจะต้องการอะไรด้วยความหลับ ท่านผู้เร่าร้อนด้วยกิเลส อันลูกศรคือตัณหาเสียบแทงดิ้นรนอยู่ จะมัวหลับมีประโยชน์อะไร ท่านออกจากเรือนบวชด้วยความเป็นผู้ไม่มีเรือนด้วยศรัทธาใด ท่านจงเพิ่มพูนศรัทธานั้นเถิด อย่าไปสู่อำนาจของความหลับเลย ฯ

คนเขลาหมกมุ่นอยู่ในกามารมณ์เหล่าใด กามารมณ์เหล่านั้นไม่เที่ยง ไม่ยั่งยืน ความหลับจะแผดเผาบรรพชิตผู้พ้นแล้ว ผู้ไม่เกี่ยวข้องในกามารมณ์ซึ่งยังสัตว์ให้ติดอยู่ได้อย่างไร เพราะกำจัดฉันทราคะเสียได้ และเพราะก้าวล่วงอวิชชาเสียได้ ญาณนั้นเป็นของบริสุทธิ์อย่างยิ่ง ไฉนความหลับจะแผดเผาบรรพชิตได้ ความหลับจะแผดเผาบรรพชิตผู้ไม่มีโศก ไม่มีความแค้นใจ เพราะทำลายอวิชชาเสียด้วยวิชชา และเพราะอาสวะสิ้นไปหมดแล้วอย่างไรได้ ความหลับจะแผดเผาบรรพชิตผู้ปรารภความเพียร ผู้มีตนอันส่งไปแล้ว ผู้บากบั่นมั่นเป็นนิตย์ ผู้จำนงพระนิพพานอยู่อย่างไรได้ ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

    At one time one of the mendicants was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.

    Tena kho pana samayena so bhikkhu divāvihāragato supati.

    Now at that time that mendicant went for the day’s meditation, but fell asleep.

    Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:

    The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that mendicant wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

    “Uṭṭhehi bhikkhu kiṁ sesi,

    “Get up, mendicant! Why lie down?

  8. 2.2

    ko attho supitena te;

    What’s the point in sleeping?

  9. 2.3

    Āturassa hi kā niddā,

    How can the afflicted slumber,

  10. 2.4

    sallaviddhassa ruppato.

    inflicted by an arrow strike?

  11. 3.1

    Yāya saddhāya pabbajito,

    You should amplify the faith

  12. 3.2

    agārasmānagāriyaṁ;

    that led you to go forth

  13. 3.3

    Tameva saddhaṁ brūhehi,

    from the lay life to homelessness.

  14. 3.4

    mā niddāya vasaṁ gamī”ti.

    Don’t fall under the sway of slumber.”

  15. 4.1

    “Aniccā addhuvā kāmā,

    “Sensual pleasures are impermanent and unstable,

  16. 4.2

    yesu mandova mucchito;

    but dullards still fall for them.

  17. 4.3

    Baddhesu muttaṁ asitaṁ,

    Among those who are bound,
    they’re free and unattached:

    kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.

    why bother a renunciate?

  19. 5.1

    Chandarāgassa vinayā,

    By removing desire and greed,

  20. 5.2

    avijjāsamatikkamā;

    by going beyond ignorance,

  21. 5.3

    Taṁ ñāṇaṁ paramodānaṁ,

    that knowledge has been perfectly cleansed:

    kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.

    why bother a renunciate?

  23. 6.1

    Chetvā avijjaṁ vijjāya,

    By breaking ignorance with knowledge,

    āsavānaṁ parikkhayā;

    by the ending of defilements,

  25. 6.3

    Asokaṁ anupāyāsaṁ,

    they’re sorrowless, unstressed:

  26. 6.4

    kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape.

    Āraddhavīriyaṁ pahitattaṁ,

    Energetic, resolute,

  28. 7.2

    Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamaṁ;

    always staunchly vigorous,

  29. 7.3

    Nibbānaṁ abhikaṅkhantaṁ,

    aspiring to extinguishment:

    Kasmā pabbajitaṁ tape”ti.
