Paṭhamakāmabhūsutta

Venerable Kāmabhū asks Citta to explain an enigmatic verse on a “one-spoked chariot”. After a brief consideration, Citta is able to explain it in detail.

ฉบับหลวงกามภูสูตรที่ ๑

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

สมัยหนึ่ง ท่านพระกามภูอยู่ที่อัมพาฏกวัน ใกล้ราวป่ามัจฉิกาสณฑ์ ครั้งนั้นแล จิตตคฤหบดีได้เข้าไปหาท่านพระกามภูถึงที่อยู่ ไหว้ แล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วท่านพระกามภูได้กล่าวกะจิตตคฤหบดีว่า ดูกรคฤหบดี พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสประพันธ์ คาถาไว้ดังนี้ว่า เธอจงดูรถอันไม่มีโทษ มีหลังคาขาว มีเพลาเดียว ไม่มีทุกข์ แล่นไปถึงที่หมาย ตัดกระแสตัณหาขาด ไม่มีกิเลสเครื่องผูกพัน ฯ

ดูกรคฤหบดี ท่านพึงเห็นเนื้อความแห่งคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสไว้โดยย่อโดยพิสดารอย่างไรหนอ ฯ

จิ. ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญ คาถาประพันธ์นี้พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสหรือ ฯ

กา. อย่างนั้น คฤหบดี ฯ

จิ. ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญ ถ้าเช่นนั้นขอท่านโปรดรอคอยอยู่ครู่หนึ่ง จนกว่ากระผมจักเพ่งเนื้อความแห่งคาถาประพันธ์นั้นได้ ฯ

ครั้งนั้นแล จิตตคฤหบดีนิ่งอยู่ครู่หนึ่ง จึงได้ตอบท่านกามภูว่า ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญ คำว่า ไม่มีโทษ นั้นเป็นชื่อของศีล คำว่า มีหลังคาขาว นั้นเป็นชื่อของวิมุตติ คำว่า มีเพลาเดียว นั้นเป็นชื่อของสติ คำว่า ย่อมแล่นไป นั้นเป็นชื่อของการก้าวไปและการถอยกลับ คำว่า รถ นั้นเป็นชื่อของร่างกาย นี้ซึ่งประกอบด้วยมหาภูตรูป ๔ มีมารดาบิดาเป็นแดนเกิด เจริญขึ้นด้วยข้าวสุกและนมสด มีความไม่เที่ยง ต้องลูบไล้นวดเฟ้น มีการแตกทำลายและกระจัดกระจายเป็นธรรมดา ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญ ราคะ โทสะ โมหะ ชื่อว่าทุกข์ ทุกข์เหล่านั้นอันภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพละได้แล้ว ตัดมูลรากขาดแล้ว ทำให้เป็นเหมือนตาลยอดด้วน ทำไม่ให้มี ไม่ให้เกิดขึ้นอีกต่อไปเป็นธรรมดา เพราะเหตุนั้นภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพพระผู้มีพระภาคจึงตรัสว่า ไม่มีทุกข์ คำว่า แล่นไปถึงที่หมาย นั้นเป็นชื่อของพระอรหันต์ คำว่า กระแส นั้นเป็นชื่อของตัณหา ตัณหานั้นอันภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพละได้แล้ว ตัดมูลรากขาดแล้ว ทำให้เป็นเหมือนตาลยอดด้วน ทำไม่ให้มี ไม่ให้เกิดขึ้นอีกต่อไปเป็นธรรมดา เพราะเหตุนั้น ภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพพระผู้มีพระภาคจึงตรัสว่า ตัดกระแสตัณหา ขาด ราคะ โทสะ โมหะ ชื่อว่ากิเลสเครื่องผูกพัน กิเลสเครื่องผูกพันเหล่านั้นอันภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพละได้แล้ว ตัดมูลรากขาดแล้ว ทำให้เป็นเหมือนตาลยอดด้วน ทำไม่ให้มี ไม่ให้เกิดขึ้นอีกต่อไปเป็นธรรมดา เพราะเหตุนั้น ภิกษุผู้ขีณาสพพระผู้มีพระภาคจึงตรัสว่า ผู้ไม่มีกิเลสเครื่องผูกพัน ข้าแต่ท่านผู้เจริญ คาถาประพันธ์ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสไว้ว่า

เธอจงดูรถอันไม่มีโทษ มีหลังคาขาว มีเพลาเดียว ไม่มีทุกข์ แล่นไปถึงที่หมาย ตัดกระแสตัณหาขาด ไม่มีกิเลสเครื่องผูกพัน ดังนี้ กระผมย่อมรู้ทั่วถึงเนื้อความแห่งคาถาประพันธ์นี้ ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสไว้โดยย่อได้ โดยพิสดารอย่างนี้ ฯ

กา. ดูกรคฤหบดี การที่ปัญญาจักษุของท่านหยั่งทราบในพระพุทธพจน์ที่ลึกซึ้งนี้ ชื่อว่าเป็นลาภของท่าน ท่านได้ดีแล้ว ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā kāmabhū macchikāsaṇḍe viharati ambāṭakavane.

    At one time Venerable Kāmabhū was staying near Macchikāsaṇḍa in the Wild Mango Grove.

    Atha kho citto gahapati yenāyasmā kāmabhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ kāmabhuṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho cittaṁ gahapatiṁ āyasmā kāmabhū etadavoca:

    Then Citta the householder went up to Venerable Kāmabhū, bowed, and sat down to one side. Kāmabhū said to him,

    ‘With faultless parts and white canopy,

    Imassa nu kho, gahapati, saṅkhittena bhāsitassa kathaṁ vitthārena attho daṭṭhabbo”ti?

    How should we see the detailed meaning of this brief statement?”

    “Kiṁ nu kho etaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā bhāsitan”ti?

    “Sir, was this spoken by the Buddha?”

    “Evaṁ, gahapatī”ti.

    “Yes, householder.”

    “Tena hi, bhante, muhuttaṁ āgamehi yāvassa atthaṁ pekkhāmī”ti.

    “Well then, sir, please wait a while as I consider the meaning of this.”

    Atha kho citto gahapati muhuttaṁ tuṇhī hutvā āyasmantaṁ kāmabhuṁ etadavoca:

    Then after staying silent for a while, Citta said to Kāmabhū:

    “‘Nelaṅgan’ti kho, bhante, sīlānametaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    “Sir, ‘faultless parts’ is a term for ethics.

    ‘Setapacchādo’ti kho, bhante, vimuttiyā etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    ‘White canopy’ is a term for freedom.

    ‘Ekāro’ti kho, bhante, satiyā etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    ‘One spoke’ is a term for mindfulness.

    ‘Vattatī’ti kho, bhante, abhikkamapaṭikkamassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    ‘Rolls on’ is a term for going forward and coming back.

    ‘Ratho’ti kho, bhante, imassetaṁ cātumahābhūtikassa kāyassa adhivacanaṁ mātāpettikasambhavassa odanakummāsūpacayassa aniccucchādanaparimaddanabhedanaviddhaṁsanadhammassa.

    ‘Chariot’ is a term for this body made up of the four principal states, produced by mother and father, built up from rice and porridge, liable to impermanence, to wearing away and erosion, to breaking up and destruction.

    Rāgo kho, bhante, nīgho, doso nīgho, moho nīgho.

    Greed, hate, and delusion are troubles.

    Te khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā.

    A mendicant who has ended the defilements has given these up, cut them off at the root, made them like a palm stump, and obliterated them, so they are unable to arise in the future.

    Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘anīgho’ti vuccati.

    That’s why a mendicant who has ended the defilements is called ‘untroubled’.

  24. 5.9

    ‘Āyantan’ti kho, bhante, arahato etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    ‘The one who comes’ is a term for the perfected one.

  25. 5.10

    ‘Soto’ti kho, bhante, taṇhāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.

    ‘Stream’ is a term for craving.

  26. 5.11

    Sā khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā.

    A mendicant who has ended the defilements has given this up, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, and obliterated it, so it’s unable to arise in the future.

  27. 5.12

    Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘chinnasoto’ti vuccati.

    That’s why a mendicant who has ended the defilements is said to have ‘cut the stream’.

  28. 5.13

    Rāgo kho, bhante, bandhanaṁ, doso bandhanaṁ, moho bandhanaṁ.

    Greed, hate, and delusion are bonds.

  29. 5.14

    Te khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā.

    A mendicant who has ended the defilements has given these up, cut them off at the root, made them like a palm stump, and obliterated them, so they are unable to arise in the future.

    Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘abandhano’ti vuccati.

    That’s why a mendicant who has ended the defilements is called ‘unbound’.

    Iti kho, bhante, yaṁ taṁ bhagavatā vuttaṁ:

    So, sir, that’s how I understand the detailed meaning of what the Buddha said in brief:

    ‘Nelaṅgo setapacchādo,

    ‘With faultless parts and white canopy,

  33. 6.2

    the one-spoked chariot rolls on.
