Mūlagandhadātāsutta
Someone of good conduct and appropriate aspiration may be reborn as a god living in fragrant roots if they give fragrant roots.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
พระนครสาวัตถี. ครั้งนั้นภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ฯลฯ ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ อะไรหนอเป็นเหตุ เป็นปัจจัยให้บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เมื่อตายไปย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไม้มีกลิ่นที่ราก พระเจ้าข้า?
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุ บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ประพฤติสุจริตด้วยกาย ด้วยวาจา ด้วยใจ เขาได้สดับมาว่า พวกเทวดาซึ่งสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไม้มีกลิ่นที่รากมีอายุยืน มีวรรณะงาม มีความสุขมาก. เขาจึงมีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ เมื่อตายไปขอเราพึงเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไม้มีกลิ่นที่ราก. เมื่อตายไปเขาย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไม้มีกลิ่นที่ราก. ดูกรภิกษุ ข้อนี้แลเป็นเหตุ เป็นปัจจัยให้บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เมื่อตายไปย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไม้มีกลิ่นที่ราก.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
- 1.2
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:
- 1.3
“ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā mūlagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti?
“Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots?”

“Idha, bhikkhu, ekacco kāyena sucaritaṁ carati, vācāya sucaritaṁ carati, manasā sucaritaṁ carati.
“Mendicant, it’s when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tassa sutaṁ hoti:
And they’ve heard:

‘mūlagandhe adhivatthā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulā’ti.
‘The gods who live in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

Tassa evaṁ hoti:
They think:

‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā mūlagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.
‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots!’

So dātā hoti mūlagandhānaṁ.
They give gifts of fragrant roots.

So kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā mūlagandhe adhivatthānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati.
When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhu, hetu …pe…
This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.”
