Koṭṭhikasutta
Mahākoṭṭhita explains to Sāriputta that ignorance is not understanding the aggregates in terms of gratification, drawback, and escape, while knowledge is understanding the aggregates.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
สมัยหนึ่ง ท่านพระสารีบุตรและท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะอยู่ ณ ป่าอิสิปตน มฤทายวัน ใกล้พระนครพาราณสี. ครั้งนั้นแล ท่านพระสารีบุตรออกจากที่พักผ่อนในเวลาเย็น ได้เข้าไปหาท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะถึงที่อยู่ ฯลฯ แล้วได้ถามท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะว่า ดูกรท่าน โกฏฐิตะ ที่เรียกว่า อวิชชา อวิชชา ดังนี้ อวิชชาเป็นไฉนหนอแล และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบ ด้วยอวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงไร? ท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะตอบว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ ปุถุชนผู้ไม่ได้ สดับแล้วในโลกนี้ ย่อมไม่รู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งคุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรูป ย่อมไม่รู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งคุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งเวทนา … แห่งสัญญา … แห่งสังขาร … แห่งวิญญาณ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า อวิชชา และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยอวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.
เมื่อท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะกล่าวอย่างนี้แล้ว ท่านพระสารีบุตรจึงได้ถามว่า ดูกรท่านโกฏฐิตะ ที่เรียกว่า วิชชา วิชชา ดังนี้ วิชชาเป็นไฉนหนอแล และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไร? ท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตะตอบว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้วในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งคุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งรูป ย่อมรู้ชัดตามความเป็นจริงซึ่งคุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งเวทนา … แห่งสัญญา … แห่งสังขาร แห่งวิญญาณ. ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุ นี้เรียกว่า วิชชา และบุคคลเป็นผู้ประกอบด้วยวิชชา ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล.

Sāriputta said to Mahākoṭṭhita:

“‘avijjā, avijjā’ti, āvuso koṭṭhika, vuccati.
“Reverend Koṭṭhita, they speak of this thing called ‘ignorance’.

What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotī”ti?
And how is an ignoramus defined?”

“Idhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rūpassa assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.
