Dutiyanaḷakapānasutta
At Naḷakapāna the Buddha invites Sāriputta to teach. He speaks of ten qualities that lead to decline or non-decline.

ข้อ ๖๘สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่ปลาสวัน ในนฬกปานนิคม สมัยนั้น แล พระผู้มีพระภาคอันหมู่ภิกษุแวดล้อม ประทับนั่งแล้วในวันอุโบสถ พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงชี้แจง
เล่ม ๒๔ · หน้า ๑๑๓ภิกษุทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทานให้อาจหาญ ให้ร่าเริง ด้วยธรรมีกถาสิ้นส่วนแห่ง ราตรีเป็นอันมาก ทรงตรวจดูภิกษุสงฆ์ผู้นิ่งเงียบอยู่แล้ว ตรัสกะท่านพระสารีบุตรว่า ดูกรสารีบุตร ภิกษุสงฆ์เป็นผู้ปราศจากถีนมิทธะแล้ว ธรรมีกถาเพื่อภิกษุทั้งหลายจงแจ่มแจ้งกะ เธอเราเมื่อยหลัง จักเอนหลัง ท่านพระสารีบุตรทูลรับพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว พระผู้มีพระ ภาครับสั่งให้ปูผ้าสังฆาฏิสี่ชั้นแล้ว สำเร็จสีหไสยาโดยพระปรัศว์เบื้องขวาซ้อนพระบาทเหลื่อม พระบาท ทรงมีสติสัมปชัญญะ ทรงกระทำอุฏฐานสัญญาไว้ในพระทัย ฯ
ณ ที่นั้นแล ท่านพระสารีบุตรเตือนภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรอาวุโสทั้งหลายภิกษุเหล่านั้น กล่าวรับท่านพระสารีบุตรแล้ว ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวว่า ดูกรอาวุโสทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ไม่มีศรัทธาในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่มีหิริ ไม่มีโอตตัปปะ ไม่มีวิริยะ ไม่มีปัญญา ไม่มีการ เงี่ยโสตลงฟังธรรม ไม่มีการทรงจำธรรมไว้ ไม่มีการพิจารณาเนื้อความ ไม่มีการปฏิบัติธรรม สมควรแก่ธรรม ไม่มีความไม่ประมาทในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย กลางคืนหรือกลางวันของผู้นั้นย่อม ผ่านพ้นไป ผู้นั้นพึงหวังได้ความเสื่อมในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่หวังได้ความเจริญเลยดูกร อาวุโสทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนกลางคืนหรือกลางวันของพระจันทร์ในปักษ์ข้างแรม ย่อมผ่านพ้น ไป พระจันทร์ย่อมเสื่อมจากวรรณะ … ฉันใด ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งไม่มีศรัทธาในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย … ไม่หวังได้ความเจริญเลย ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ฯ
ดูกรอาวุโสทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งมีศรัทธาในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย มีหิริมีโอตตัปปะ มีวิริยะ มีปัญญา มีการเงี่ยโสตลงฟังธรรม มีการทรงจำธรรมไว้มีการพิจารณาเนื้อความ มีการปฏิบัติ ธรรมสมควรแก่ธรรม มีความไม่ประมาทในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย กลางคืนหรือกลางวันของผู้นั้น ย่อมผ่านพ้นไป ผู้นั้นพึงหวังความเจริญในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย ไม่หวังได้ความเสื่อมเลย ดูกร อาวุโสทั้งหลายเปรียบเหมือนกลางคืนหรือกลางวันของพระจันทร์ในปักษ์ข้างขึ้น ย่อมผ่านพ้น ไปพระจันทร์นั้นย่อมเจริญด้วยวรรณะ … ฉันใด ดูกรอาวุโสทั้งหลาย ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งมีศรัทธาใน กุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย … ไม่หวังได้ความเสื่อมเลย ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคเสด็จลุกขึ้นแล้ว ตรัสชมท่านพระสารีบุตรว่าดีละ ดีละ สารีบุตร ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งไม่มีศรัทธาในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย … ไม่หวังได้ความเจริญเลย ดูกรสารีบุตร เปรียบเหมือนกลางคืนหรือกลางวันของพระจันทร์ในปักษ์ข้างแรม ย่อมผ่านพ้นไป พระจันทร์

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā naḷakapāne viharati palāsavane.
At one time the Buddha stayed near Naḷakapāna in the grove of flame-of-the-forest trees.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto nisinno hoti.
Now, at that time it was the sabbath, and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by the Saṅgha of monks.

Atha kho bhagavā bahudeva rattiṁ bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā tuṇhībhūtaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ anuviloketvā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ āmantesi:
The Buddha spent much of the night educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the monks with a Dhamma talk. Then he looked around the Saṅgha of monks, who were so very silent. He addressed Venerable Sāriputta,

“Vigatathinamiddho kho, sāriputta, bhikkhusaṅgho.
“Sāriputta, the Saṅgha of monks is rid of dullness and drowsiness.

Paṭibhātu taṁ, sāriputta, bhikkhūnaṁ dhammī kathā.
Give them some Dhamma talk as you feel inspired.

Piṭṭhi me āgilāyati;
My back is sore,
- 2.4
tamahaṁ āyamissāmī”ti.
I’ll stretch it.”

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavato paccassosi.
“Yes, sir,” Sāriputta replied.

Atha kho bhagavā catugguṇaṁ saṅghāṭiṁ paññāpetvā dakkhiṇena passena sīhaseyyaṁ kappesi pāde pādaṁ accādhāya sato sampajāno uṭṭhānasaññaṁ manasi karitvā.
And then the Buddha spread out his outer robe folded in four and laid down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi:
There Sāriputta addressed the monks:

“Reverends, monks!”

It’s like the moon in the waning fortnight. Whether by day or by night, its beauty, roundness, luminosity, and diameter and circumference only decline.
