SN 2.6

Kāmadasutta

The deity Kāmada addresses the Buddha with a series of cryptic statements lamenting the difficulty of spiritual practice. The Buddha agrees, but points out that true practitioners do it even though it’s hard.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๒๓๒กามทเทวบุตร ยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้กราบทูลพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค สมณธรรมทำได้โดยยาก ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค สมณธรรมทำได้โดยยากยิ่ง ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ชนทั้งหลายผู้ตั้งมั่นแล้วด้วยศีลแห่งพระเสขะ มีตนตั้งมั่นแล้วย่อมกระทำ แม้ซึ่งสมณธรรมอันบุคคลทำได้โดยยาก ความยินดีย่อมนำสุขมาให้แก่บุคคลผู้เข้าถึงแล้วซึ่งความเป็นผู้ไม่มีเรือน ฯ

ข้อ ๒๓๓กามทเทวบุตรกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ข้อที่หาได้ยากนี้ คือความสันโดษ ยินดี ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ชนเหล่าใดยินดีแล้วในความสงบแห่งจิต ชนเหล่าใดมีใจยินดีแล้วในความอบรมจิตทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน ชนเหล่านั้นย่อมได้แม้ซึ่งสิ่งที่ได้โดยยาก ฯ

ข้อ ๒๓๔กามทเทวบุตรกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ธรรมชาติที่ตั้งมั่นได้ยากนี้ คือจิต ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ชนเหล่าใดยินดีแล้วในความสงบอินทรีย์ ชนเหล่านั้นย่อมตั้งมั่นซึ่งจิตที่ตั้งมั่นได้ยาก ดูกรกามทเทวบุตร อริยะทั้งหลายเหล่านั้นตัดข่ายแห่งมัจจุไปได้ ฯ

ข้อ ๒๓๕กามทเทวบุตรกราบทูลว่า ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาค ทางที่ไปได้ยาก คือ ทางที่ไม่เสมอ ฯ

เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๖๐พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรกามทเทวบุตร อริยะทั้งหลายย่อมไปได้แม้ในทางที่ไม่เสมอ ที่ไปได้ยาก ผู้มิใช่อริยะย่อมเป็นผู้บ่ายศีรษะลงเบื้องต่ำ ตกไปในทางอันไม่เสมอ ทางนั้นสม่ำเสมอสำหรับอริยะทั้งหลาย เพราะอริยะทั้งหลายเป็นผู้สม่ำเสมอในทางอันไม่เสมอ ฯ

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

  5. 1.2

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho kāmado devaputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Standing to one side, the godling Kāmada said to the Buddha,

    “dukkaraṁ, bhagavā, sudukkaraṁ, bhagavā”ti.

    “It’s too hard, Blessed One! It’s just too hard!”

    “Dukkaraṁ vāpi karonti,

    “They do it even though it’s hard,”

  8. 2.2

    (kāmadāti bhagavā)

    said the Buddha to Kāmada,

  9. 2.3

    Sekhā sīlasamāhitā;

    “the stable trainees with ethics, and immersion.

    Ṭhitattā anagāriyupetassa,

    For one who has entered the homeless life,

    Tuṭṭhi hoti sukhāvahā”ti.

    contentment brings happiness.”

    “Dullabhā, bhagavā, yadidaṁ tuṭṭhī”ti.

    “Such contentment, Blessed One, is hard to find.”

    “Dullabhaṁ vāpi labhanti,

    “They find it even though it’s hard,”

    (kāmadāti bhagavā)

    said the Buddha to Kāmada,

    Cittavūpasame ratā;

    “those who love to settle the mind;

    Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca,

    whose minds love to meditate

    Bhāvanāya rato mano”ti.

    day and night.”

    “Dussamādahaṁ, bhagavā, yadidaṁ cittan”ti.

    “But it’s hard, Blessed One, to immerse this mind in samādhi.”

    “Dussamādahaṁ vāpi samādahanti,

    “They become immersed in samādhi
    even though it’s hard,”

  20. 6.2

    (kāmadāti bhagavā)

    said the Buddha to Kāmada,

    Indriyūpasame ratā;

    “those who love calming the faculties.

  22. 6.4

    Te chetvā maccuno jālaṁ,

    Having cut through the net of Death,

  23. 6.5

    Ariyā gacchanti kāmadā”ti.

    the noble ones, Kāmada, go on their way.”

  24. 7.1

    “Duggamo, bhagavā, visamo maggo”ti.

    “But this path, Blessed One, is rough and hard to travel.”

    “Duggame visame vāpi,

    “Though it’s rough, hard to travel,

    Ariyā gacchanti kāmada;

    the noble ones, Kāmada, go on their way.

    Anariyā visame magge,

    The ignoble fall headfirst

    Papatanti avaṁsirā;

    on a rough path.

  29. 8.5

    Ariyānaṁ samo maggo,

    But the path of the noble ones is smooth,

  30. 8.6

    Ariyā hi visame samā”ti.

    for the noble ones are smooth amid the rough.”
