SN 2.12

Veṇḍusutta

The deity Veṇhu celebrates the joy of those who follow the Buddha’s teaching. The Buddha affirms that such will escape death. Veṇhu is the Pali spelling of Sanskrit Viṣṇu, and this marks a rare appearance of a god of this name in the early texts.

เวณฑุเทวบุตร ยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้กล่าวคาถานี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ชนเหล่าใดนั่งใกล้พระสุคต ประกอบตนในศาสนาของพระโคดม ไม่ประมาทแล้ว ศึกษาตามอยู่ ชนเหล่านั้นถึงความสุขแล้วหนอ ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ชนเหล่าใดเป็นผู้เพ่งพินิจ ศึกษาตามในข้อสั่งสอนอันเรากล่าวไว้แล้ว ชนเหล่านั้นไม่ประมาทอยู่ในกาล ไม่พึงไปสู่อำนาจแห่งมัจจุ ฯ

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho veṇḍu devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

    Standing to one side, the godling Vishnu spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

    “Sukhitāva te manujā,

    “Happy are the men

  6. 2.2

    sugataṁ payirupāsiya;

    who pay homage to the Holy One!

    Yuñjaṁ gotamasāsane,

    They apply themselves to Gotama’s instructions,

    appamattā nu sikkhare”ti.

    diligently training.”

    “Ye me pavutte siṭṭhipade,

    “Those who practice absorption
    in accord with the training”,

    (veṇḍūti bhagavā)

    said the Buddha to Vishnu,

    Anusikkhanti jhāyino;

    “in the way of teaching I’ve proclaimed,

    Kāle te appamajjantā,

    diligent while there is still time;

    Na maccuvasagā siyun”ti.

    they won’t fall under the sway of Death.”
