Dukkhasutta

The origin and ending of suffering are explained in terms of sense experience giving rise to craving.

พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี … พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายเราจักแสดงเหตุเกิดแห่งทุกข์ และความดับแห่งทุกข์ ท่านทั้งหลายจงฟัง จงจำไว้ในใจให้ดี เราจักกล่าว ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลรับพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า พระพุทธเจ้าข้า ฯ

พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสดังนี้ว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ความเกิดขึ้นแห่งทุกข์เป็นไฉน เพราะอาศัยจักษุและรูปจึงเกิดจักขุวิญญาณ ความประชุมแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการเป็นผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดตัณหา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แลเป็นความเกิดขึ้นแห่งทุกข์เพราะอาศัยหูและเสียง … เพราะอาศัยจมูกและกลิ่น … เพราะอาศัยลิ้นและรส …เพราะอาศัยกายและโผฏฐัพพะ … เพราะอาศัยใจและธรรมจึงเกิดมโนวิญญาณ ความประชุมแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการเป็นผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดตัณหา ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แลเป็นความเกิดขึ้นแห่งทุกข์ ฯ

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็ความดับแห่งทุกข์เป็นไฉน เพราะอาศัยจักษุและรูปจึงเกิดจักขุวิญญาณ ความประชุมแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการเป็นผัสสะเพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดตัณหา เพราะตัณหานั้นเทียวดับด้วยสำรอกโดยไม่เหลืออุปาทานจึงดับ เพราะอุปาทานดับภพจึงดับ เพราะภพดับชาติจึงดับ เพราะชาติดับชราและมรณะโสกปริเทวทุกขโทมนัสและอุปายาสจึงดับ ความดับแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แลเป็นความดับแห่งทุกข์ เพราะอาศัยหูและเสียง …เพราะอาศัยจมูกและกลิ่น … เพราะอาศัยลิ้นและรส … เพราะอาศัยกายและโผฏฐัพพะ … เพราะอาศัยใจและธรรม จึงเกิดมโนวิญญาณ ความประชุมแห่งธรรม ๓ ประการเป็นผัสสะ เพราะผัสสะเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดเวทนา เพราะเวทนาเป็นปัจจัยจึงเกิดตัณหา เพราะตัณหานั้นเทียวดับด้วยสำรอกโดยไม่เหลืออุปาทานจึงดับ เพราะอุปาทานดับภพจึงดับ เพราะภพดับชาติจึงดับ เพราะชาติดับชราและมรณะโสกปริเทวทุกขโทมนัสและอุปายาสจึงดับ ความดับแห่งกองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนี้ ย่อมมีด้วยประการอย่างนี้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้แลเป็นความดับแห่งทุกข์ ฯ

    “Dukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi.

    “Mendicants, I will teach you the origin and disappearance of suffering.

    Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

    “Yes, sir,” they replied.

    upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho;

    When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

  28. 4.7

    bhavanirodhā jātinirodho;

    When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

  29. 4.8

    jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti.

    When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

  30. 4.9

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.

    That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

    Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaṅgamo.

    This is the disappearance of suffering.
