Saccavibhaṅgasutta
Expanding on the Buddha’s first sermon, Venerable Sāriputta gives a detailed explanation of the four noble truths.

ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาอย่างนี้ สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่ป่าอิสิปตนมิคทายวัน เขตเมืองพาราณสี สมัยนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลรับ พระดำรัสแล้ว ฯ
พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสดังนี้ว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธ ได้ประกาศธรรมจักรอันไม่มีธรรมอื่นยิ่งกว่า ที่ป่าอิสิปตนมิคทายวัน เขตเมืองพาราณสี อันสมณะหรือพราหมณ์ หรือเทวดา หรือมาร หรือพรหม หรือใครๆ ในโลก ยังไม่เคยประกาศ ได้แก่ บอกแสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ อริยสัจ ๔ เหล่าไหนคือบอก แสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งทุกขอริยสัจ ทุกขสมุทัย อริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา อริยสัจ ตถาคตอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธ ได้ประกาศธรรมจักรอันไม่มีธรรมอื่นยิ่งกว่าที่ป่าอิสิปตนมิคทายวัน เขตเมืองพาราณสี อันสมณะ หรือพราหมณ์ หรือเทวดา หรือมาร หรือพรหม หรือใครๆ ในโลก ยังไม่เคยประกาศ ได้แก่ บอกแสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ นี้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอจงเสพ จงคบสารีบุตรและโมคคัลลานะเถิด ทั้งสองรูปนี้เป็น บัณฑิตภิกษุ ผู้อนุเคราะห์ผู้ร่วมประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ สารีบุตรเปรียบเหมือนผู้ให้กำเนิด โมคคัลลานะเปรียบเหมือนผู้บำรุงเลี้ยงทารกที่เกิดแล้ว สารีบุตรย่อมแนะนำในโสดาปัตติผล โมคคัลลานะย่อมแนะนำในผลชั้นสูง สารีบุตรพอที่จะบอก แสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ได้โดยพิสดาร พระผู้มีพระภาคผู้พระสุคตได้ตรัสพระภาษิต นี้แล้ว เสด็จลุกจากอาสนะเข้าไปยังพระวิหาร ฯ
ขณะนั้น เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคเสด็จหลีกไปแล้วไม่นาน พระสารีบุตรได้เรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุเหล่านั้นรับคำท่านพระสารีบุตรแล้ว ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวดังนี้ว่า ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย พระตถาคตอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธ ได้ประกาศ ธรรมจักรอันไม่มีธรรมอื่นยิ่งกว่าที่ป่าอิสิปตนมิคทายวัน เขตเมืองพาราณสี อันสมณะ หรือ พราหมณ์ หรือเทวดาหรือมาร หรือพรหม หรือใครๆ ในโลก ยังไม่เคยประกาศ ได้แก่ บอก แสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ อริยสัจ ๔ เหล่าไหน คือ บอก แสดง บัญญัติ แต่งตั้ง เปิดเผย จำแนก ทำให้ง่ายซึ่งทุกขอริยสัจ ทุกขสมุทัย อริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจ ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขอริยสัจเป็นไฉน คือ ชาติก็เป็นทุกข์ ชราก็เป็นทุกข์ มรณะก็เป็นทุกข์ โสกะปริเทวะ ทุกขะ โทมนัสและอุปายาส ก็เป็นทุกข์ ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนาก็เป็นทุกข์ โดยประมวลแล้วอุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ เป็นทุกข์ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ชาติเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความเกิด ความเกิดพร้อม ความหยั่งลง ความบังเกิด ความบังเกิดเฉพาะ ความปรากฏแห่งขันธ์ ความได้เฉพาะซึ่งอายตนะในหมู่สัตว์นั้นๆ ของสัตว์ทั้งหลายนั้นๆ นี้เรียกว่าชาติ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ชราเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความแก่ ความคร่ำคร่า ความเป็นผู้มีฟันหัก มีผมหงอก มีหนังย่น ความเสื่อมอายุ ความหง่อมแห่งอินทรีย์ในหมู่สัตว์นั้นๆ ของสัตว์ทั้งหลายนั้นๆ นี้เรียกว่าชรา ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็มรณะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความจุติ ความเคลื่อนไป ความแตก ความอันตรธาน ความตาย ความมรณะ การทำกาละ ความสลายแห่งขันธ์ ความทอดทิ้งร่าง ความขาดชีวิตินทรีย์จากหมู่สัตว์นั้นๆ ของสัตว์ทั้งหลายนั้นๆ นี้เรียกว่ามรณะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็โสกะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความโศก ความเศร้า ความเหี่ยวแห้งใจ ความเหี่ยวแห้งภายใน ความเหี่ยวแห้งรอบในภายในของบุคคลผู้ประจวบกับความพิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง อันเหตุแห่งทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ถูกต้องแล้ว นี้เรียกว่าโสกะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ปริเทวะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความรำพัน ความร่ำไร กิริยารำพัน กิริยาร่ำไร ลักษณะที่รำพัน ลักษณะที่ร่ำไร ของบุคคลที่ประจวบกับความพิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง อันเหตุแห่งทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งถูกต้องแล้ว นี้เรียกว่าปริเทวะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความลำบากกาย ความไม่สบายกาย ความเสวยอารมณ์ที่ลำบาก ที่ไม่สบาย อันเกิดแต่สัมผัสทางกาย นี้เรียกว่าทุกขะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็โทมนัสเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความลำบากใจ ความไม่สบายใจ ความเสวยอารมณ์ที่ลำบาก ที่ไม่สบาย อันเกิดแต่สัมผัสทางใจ นี้เรียกว่าโทมนัส ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็อุปายาสเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความคับใจ ความแค้นใจ ลักษณะที่คับใจ ลักษณะที่แค้นใจ ของบุคคลผู้ประจวบกับความพิบัติอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง อันเหตุแห่งทุกข์อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งถูกต้องแล้ว นี้เรียกว่าอุปายาส ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนาเป็นทุกข์เป็นไฉน ได้แก่ สัตว์ทั้งหลายผู้มีความเกิดเป็นธรรมดา เกิดความปรารถนาขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอเราอย่าต้องเกิดเป็นธรรมดา และความเกิดอย่าพึงมาถึงเราเลย อันข้อนี้ ใครๆ จะสำเร็จตามความปรารถนาไม่ได้เลย แม้นี้ก็ชื่อว่า ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนา เป็นทุกข์ สัตว์ทั้งหลายผู้มีความแก่เป็นธรรมดา เกิดความปรารถนาขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอเราอย่าต้องแก่เป็นธรรมดา และความแก่อย่าพึงมาถึงเราเลย อันข้อนี้ ใครๆ จะสำเร็จตามความปรารถนาไม่ได้เลย แม้นี้ก็ชื่อว่าความไม่ได้สมปรารถนา เป็นทุกข์ สัตว์ทั้งหลายผู้มีความเจ็บไข้เป็นธรรมดา เกิดความปรารถนาขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอเราอย่าต้องเจ็บไข้เป็นธรรมดา และความเจ็บไข้อย่าพึงมาถึงเราเลย อันข้อนี้ ใครๆ จะสำเร็จตามความปรารถนาไม่ได้เลย แม้นี้ก็ชื่อว่า ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนา เป็นทุกข์ สัตว์ทั้งหลายผู้มีความตายเป็นธรรมดา เกิดความปรารถนาขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอเราอย่าต้องตายเป็นธรรมดา และความตายอย่าพึงมาถึงเราเลย อันข้อนี้ ใครๆ จะสำเร็จตามความปรารถนาไม่ได้เลย แม้นี้ก็ชื่อว่า ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนา เป็นทุกข์ สัตว์ทั้งหลายผู้มีโสกะ ปริเทวะ ทุกขะ โทมนัส และอุปายาสเป็นธรรมดาเกิดความปรารถนาขึ้นอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ ขอเราอย่าต้องมีโสกะ ปริเทวะ ทุกขะ โทมนัส และอุปายาสเป็นธรรมดา และโสกะ ปริเทวะ ทุกขะ โทมนัส และอุปายาสอย่าพึงมาถึงเราเลย อันข้อนี้ ใครๆ จะสำเร็จตามความปรารถนาไม่ได้เลย แม้นี้ก็ชื่อว่า ความไม่ได้สมปรารถนา เป็นทุกข์ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็โดยประมวลแล้ว อุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ เป็นทุกข์ เป็นไฉน คืออย่างนี้ อุปาทานขันธ์คือรูป คือเวทนา คือสัญญา คือสังขาร คือวิญญาณ เหล่านี้ชื่อว่า โดยประมวลแล้ว อุปาทานขันธ์ ๕ เป็นทุกข์ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าทุกขอริยสัจ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขสมุทัยอริยสัจเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ตัณหาที่นำไปสู่ภพใหม่ สหรคตด้วยความกำหนัด ด้วยอำนาจความยินดี อันมีความเพลิดเพลินในอารมณ์นั้นๆ คือ กามตัณหา ภวตัณหา วิภวตัณหานี้เรียกว่า ทุกขสมุทัยอริยสัจ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความดับด้วยอำนาจคลายกำหนัดไม่มีส่วนเหลือ ความสละ ความสลัดคืน ความปล่อย ความไม่มีอาลัย ซึ่งตัณหานั้นนั่นแล นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธอริยสัจ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ มรรคมีองค์ ๘ อันประเสริฐนี้แล ซึ่งมีดังนี้
(๑) สัมมาทิฐิ
(๒) สัมมาสังกัปปะ
(๓) สัมมาวาจา
(๔) สัมมากัมมันตะ
(๕) สัมมาอาชีวะ
(๖) สัมมาวายามะ
(๗) สัมมาสติ
(๘) สัมมาสมาธิ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาทิฐิเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความรู้ในทุกข์ ความรู้ในทุกขสมุทัย ความรู้ในทุกขนิโรธ ความรู้ในทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทา นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาทิฐิ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาสังกัปปะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ ความดำริในเนกขัมมะ ความดำริในอันไม่พยาบาท ความดำริในอันไม่เบียดเบียน นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสังกัปปะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาวาจาเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ เจตนา เป็นเครื่องงดเว้นจาก พูดเท็จ จากพูดส่อเสียด จากพูดคำหยาบ จากเจรจาเพ้อเจ้อ นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาวาจา ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมากัมมันตะเป็นไฉน ได้แก่ เจตนาเป็น เครื่องงดเว้นจาก ปาณาติบาต จากอทินนาทาน จากกาเมสุมิจฉาจาร นี้เรียกว่าสัมมากัมมันตะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาอาชีวะเป็นไฉน คือ อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ ละมิจฉาชีพแล้ว สำเร็จความเป็นอยู่ด้วยสัมมาชีพ นี้เรียกว่า สัมมาอาชีวะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาวายามะเป็นไฉน คือ ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ ย่อมให้เกิดฉันทะ พยายาม ปรารภความเพียร ประคองจิต ตั้งจิตไว้ เพื่อไม่ให้อกุศลธรรมอันลามก ที่ยังไม่เกิดได้เกิดขึ้น ๑ เพื่อละอกุศลธรรมอันลามกที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วเสีย ๑ เพื่อให้กุศลธรรม ที่ยังไม่เกิดขึ้นได้เกิดขึ้น ๑ เพื่อความตั้งมั่นไม่ฟั่นเฝือ เพิ่มพูน ไพบูลย์ เจริญ และบริบูรณ์ของกุศลธรรมที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว ๑ นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาวายามะ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาสติเป็นไฉน คือ ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ เป็นผู้พิจารณา เห็นกายในกาย มีความเพียร รู้สึกตัว มีสติ กำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสียได้อยู่ เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นเวทนาในเวทนา ... เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นจิตในจิต ... เป็นผู้พิจารณาเห็นธรรมในธรรม มีความเพียร รู้สึกตัว มีสติกำจัดอภิชฌาและโทมนัสในโลกเสียได้อยู่ นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสติ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย ก็สัมมาสมาธิเป็นไฉน คือ ภิกษุในธรรมวินัยนี้ สงัดจากกาม สงัดจากอกุศลธรรม เข้าปฐมฌาน มีวิตก มีวิจาร มีปีติและสุขเกิดแต่วิเวกอยู่ เข้าทุติยฌาน มีความผ่องใสแห่งใจภายใน มีความเป็นธรรมเอกผุดขึ้น ไม่มีวิตก ไม่มีวิจาร เพราะสงบวิตก และวิจารเสีย มีปีติและสุขเกิดแต่สมาธิอยู่ เข้าตติยฌาน ... อยู่ เข้าจตุตถฌาน ... อยู่ นี้เรียกว่าสัมมาสมาธิ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่า ทุกขนิโรธคามินีปฏิปทาอริยสัจ ฯ
ดูกรท่านผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย พระตถาคตอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้ทรงประกาศ ธรรมจักรอันไม่มีธรรมอื่นยิ่งกว่า ที่ป่าอิสิปตนมิคทายวัน เขตเมืองพาราณสี อันสมณะหรือพราหมณ์ หรือเทวดา หรือมาร หรือพรหม หรือใครๆ ในโลก ยังไม่เคยประกาศ ได้แก่ทรงบอก ทรงแสดง ทรงบัญญัติ ทรงแต่งตั้ง ทรงเปิดเผย ทรงจำแนก ทรงทำให้ง่ายซึ่งอริยสัจ ๔ นี้ ฯ
ท่านพระสารีบุตรได้กล่าวดังนี้แล้ว ภิกษุเหล่านั้นต่างชื่นชมยินดีภาษิตของท่านพระสารีบุตรแล ฯ

The Analysis of the Truths

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati isipatane migadāye.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi in the deer park at Isipatana.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

“bhikkhavo”ti.
“Mendicants!”
- 1.5
“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
“Venerable sir,” they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Buddha said this:

“Tathāgatena, bhikkhave, arahatā sammāsambuddhena bārāṇasiyaṁ isipatane migadāye anuttaraṁ dhammacakkaṁ pavattitaṁ appaṭivattiyaṁ samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmiṁ, yadidaṁ—
“Near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha rolled forth the supreme Wheel of Dhamma. And that wheel cannot be rolled back by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or divinity or by anyone in the world.

catunnaṁ ariyasaccānaṁ ācikkhanā desanā paññāpanā paṭṭhapanā vivaraṇā vibhajanā uttānīkammaṁ.
It is the teaching, advocating, establishing, clarifying, analyzing, and revealing of the four noble truths.

Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ?
What four?

Dukkhassa ariyasaccassa ācikkhanā desanā paññāpanā paṭṭhapanā vivaraṇā vibhajanā uttānīkammaṁ, dukkhasamudayassa ariyasaccassa ācikkhanā desanā paññāpanā paṭṭhapanā vivaraṇā vibhajanā uttānīkammaṁ, dukkhanirodhassa ariyasaccassa ācikkhanā desanā paññāpanā paṭṭhapanā vivaraṇā vibhajanā uttānīkammaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ariyasaccassa ācikkhanā desanā paññāpanā paṭṭhapanā vivaraṇā vibhajanā uttānīkammaṁ.
The noble truths of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.

Sevatha, bhikkhave, sāriputtamoggallāne;
Mendicants, you should cultivate friendship with Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
- 5.2
bhajatha, bhikkhave, sāriputtamoggallāne.
You should associate with Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
- 5.3
Paṇḍitā bhikkhū anuggāhakā sabrahmacārīnaṁ.
They’re astute, and they support their spiritual companions.
- 5.4
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, janetā, evaṁ sāriputto;
Sāriputta is like one who gives birth,
- 5.5
seyyathāpi jātassa āpādetā, evaṁ moggallāno.
while Moggallāna is like one who raises the child.
- 5.6
Sāriputto, bhikkhave, sotāpattiphale vineti, moggallāno uttamatthe.
Sāriputta guides people to the fruit of stream-entry, Moggallāna to the highest goal.
- 5.7
Sāriputto, bhikkhave, pahoti cattāri ariyasaccāni vitthārena ācikkhituṁ desetuṁ paññāpetuṁ paṭṭhapetuṁ vivarituṁ vibhajituṁ uttānīkātun”ti.
Sāriputta is able to explain, teach, assert, establish, clarify, analyze, and reveal the four noble truths in detail.”

Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.

Idaṁ vatvāna sugato uṭṭhāyāsanā vihāraṁ pāvisi.
When he had spoken, the Holy One rose from his seat and entered his dwelling.

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto acirapakkantassa bhagavato bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then, not long after the Buddha left, Venerable Sāriputta said to the mendicants,

“āvuso bhikkhave”ti.
“Reverends, mendicants!”

“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ.
“Reverend,” they replied.

Sāriputta said this:

“Tathāgatena, āvuso, arahatā sammāsambuddhena bārāṇasiyaṁ isipatane migadāye anuttaraṁ dhammacakkaṁ pavattitaṁ appaṭivattiyaṁ samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmiṁ, yadidaṁ—
“Near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha rolled forth the supreme Wheel of Dhamma. And that wheel cannot be rolled back by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or divinity or by anyone in the world.

And what is the noble truth of suffering?

Jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, maraṇampi dukkhaṁ, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ; saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā.
Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.

And what is rebirth?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jāti sañjāti okkanti abhinibbatti khandhānaṁ pātubhāvo āyatanānaṁ paṭilābho,
The rebirth, inception, conception, regeneration, manifestation of the aggregates, and acquisition of the sense fields of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘jāti’.
This is called rebirth.

Katamā cāvuso, jarā?
And what is old age?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jarā jīraṇatā khaṇḍiccaṁ pāliccaṁ valittacatā āyuno saṁhāni indriyānaṁ paripāko,
The old age, decrepitude, broken teeth, grey hair, wrinkly skin, diminished vitality, and failing faculties of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘jarā’.
This is called old age.

Katamañcāvuso, maraṇaṁ?
And what is death?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhā tamhā sattanikāyā cuti cavanatā bhedo antaradhānaṁ maccu maraṇaṁ kālaṅkiriyā khandhānaṁ bhedo kaḷevarassa nikkhepo jīvitindriyassupacchedo,
The passing away, passing on, disintegration, demise, mortality, death, decease, breaking up of the aggregates, laying to rest of the corpse, and cutting off of the life faculty of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘maraṇaṁ’.
This is called death.

Katamo cāvuso, soko?
And what is sorrow?

Yo kho, āvuso, aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa soko socanā socitattaṁ antosoko antoparisoko,
The sorrow, sorrowing, state of sorrow, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘soko’.
This is called sorrow.

Katamo cāvuso, paridevo?
And what is lamentation?

Yo kho, āvuso, aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa ādevo paridevo ādevanā paridevanā ādevitattaṁ paridevitattaṁ,
The wail, lament, wailing, lamenting, state of wailing and lamentation in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘paridevo’.
This is called lamentation.

Katamañcāvuso, dukkhaṁ?
And what is pain?

Physical pain, physical unpleasantness, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from physical contact.

idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘dukkhaṁ’.
This is called pain.

Katamañcāvuso, domanassaṁ?
And what is sadness?

Yaṁ kho, āvuso, cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ cetasikaṁ asātaṁ manosamphassajaṁ dukkhaṁ asātaṁ vedayitaṁ,
Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from mind contact.

idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘domanassaṁ’.
This is called sadness.

Katamo cāvuso, upāyāso?
And what is distress?

Yo kho, āvuso, aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa āyāso upāyāso āyāsitattaṁ upāyāsitattaṁ,
The stress, distress, state of stress and distress in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘upāyāso’.
This is called distress.

Katamañcāvuso, yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ?
And what is ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’?

Jātidhammānaṁ, āvuso, sattānaṁ evaṁ icchā uppajjati:
In sentient beings who are liable to be reborn, such a wish arises:

‘aho vata mayaṁ na jātidhammā assāma; na ca vata no jāti āgaccheyyā’ti.
‘Oh, if only we were not liable to be reborn! If only rebirth would not come to us!’

Na kho panetaṁ icchāya pattabbaṁ.
But you can’t get that by wishing.
- 19.5
Idampi: ‘yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ’.
This is: ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’.

But you can’t get that by wishing.

Idampi: ‘yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ’.
This is: ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’.

Katame cāvuso, saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā?
And what is ‘in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering’?

Seyyathidaṁ—rūpupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saññupādānakkhandho, saṅkhārupādānakkhandho, viññāṇupādānakkhandho.
They are the grasping aggregates that consist of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

Ime vuccantāvuso: ‘saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā’.
This is called ‘in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering’.
- 20.4
Idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ’.
This is called the noble truth of suffering.

Katamañcāvuso, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?

Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobbhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṁ—
It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure there wherever it alights. That is,

kāmataṇhā bhavataṇhā vibhavataṇhā,
craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving for nonexistence.
- 21.4
idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ’.
This is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering.
- 22.1
Katamañcāvuso, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?
- 22.2
Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo,
It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving no residue left behind; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it.

idaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ’.
This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.

Katamañcāvuso, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ?
And what is the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering?

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—
It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi.
right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

And what is right view?

Yaṁ kho, āvuso, dukkhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhasamudaye ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ñāṇaṁ,
Knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘sammādiṭṭhi’.
This is called right view.

Katamo cāvuso, sammāsaṅkappo?
And what is right purpose?
- 25.2
Nekkhammasaṅkappo, abyāpādasaṅkappo, avihiṁsāsaṅkappo,
Purposes of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘sammāsaṅkappo’.
This is called right purpose.

Katamā cāvuso, sammāvācā?
And what is right speech?

Musāvādā veramaṇī, pisuṇāya vācāya veramaṇī, pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī, samphappalāpā veramaṇī,
Refraining from lying, backbiting, harsh speech, and talking nonsense.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘sammāvācā’.
This is called right speech.

Katamo cāvuso, sammākammanto?
And what is right action?

Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī, adinnādānā veramaṇī, kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇī,
Refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct.

Katamo cāvuso, sammāājīvo?
And what is right livelihood?

Idhāvuso, ariyasāvako micchāājīvaṁ pahāya sammāājīvena jīvikaṁ kappeti,
It’s when a noble disciple gives up wrong livelihood and earns a living by right livelihood.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘sammāājīvo’.
This is called right livelihood.

Katamo cāvuso, sammāvāyāmo?
And what is right effort?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu anuppannānaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati,
It’s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise.

uppannānaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati,
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.

anuppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ uppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati,
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.

uppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati,
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fully developed.

It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṁ savicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati,
It’s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.

vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati,
As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati …pe… tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ …pe…
And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, experiencing for themselves the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’

catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati,
With the giving up of pleasure and pain and the disappearance of former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

ayaṁ vuccatāvuso: ‘sammāsamādhi’.
This is called right immersion.
