ฉบับหลวงนิรยสูตร
ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๗๓ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสกประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ เหมือนถูกนำมา วางไว้ในนรก ธรรม ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ อุบาสกเป็นผู้ฆ่าสัตว์ ฯลฯเป็นผู้ดื่มน้ำเมา คือสุราและเมรัยอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความประมาท ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายอุบาสกประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล เหมือนถูกนำมาวางไว้ในนรก ฯ
ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสกประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการ เหมือนถูกเชิญมาอยู่ใน สวรรค์ ธรรม ๕ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ อุบาสกเป็นผู้งดเว้นจากปาณาติบาต ฯลฯ เป็นผู้ งดเว้นจากการดื่มน้ำเมาคือสุราและเมรัยอันเป็นที่ตั้งแห่งความประมาท ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อุบาสก ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๕ ประการนี้แล เหมือนถูกเชิญมาอยู่ในสวรรค์ ฯ

“Mendicants, a lay follower with five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

Pāṇātipātī hoti …pe… surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāyī hoti.
They kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, and consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato upāsako yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.
A lay follower with these five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.
